Back to Basics
|
| |
| |
The
philosophy behind each service and every product at BACK TO BASICS is
that we need to return to our roots, back to the basics, in order to
encourage and sustain a healthy environment - both our immediate
environment, ie. our bodies, our mental and physical states of being,
and our surroundings - for ourselves and our loved ones. Much of what I
do is based on a firm belief and strong faith in traditional wisdoms:
the centuries-old tradition of herbal medicine, the eternal knowledge of
the power of touch, and the timeless wisdom of those (women) who have
throughout history chosen to heal, support and mother pregnant, birthing
and nurturing women. Above all, I believe in a gentle and simple path to
health, from healthy beginnings and onwards throughout life’s travels. |

Doula Service |
| |
|
|
| |
The word “doula” comes from the Greek and means woman
caregiver of another woman; today the term applies to a professional,
experienced support person, usually a woman, who provides a birthing
woman and her partner with emotional and physical support throughout the
entire labour and delivery. A doula provides nurturing, helpful, and
objective support so that any family members chosen to be present at the
birth are not alone in supporting the woman in labour.
A doula facilitates and enhances a woman’s birth
experience; she encourages the mother to allow her own body to tell her
what may be best at various times during labour, she can assist
regarding non-medical methods of pain relief such as relaxation
techniques, tension-releasing breathing, position changes,
visualization, and appropriate touch and massage, she can help the
partner to be less anxious, and she provides quiet reassurance. Besides
labour support, most doulas also provide some prenatal and postpartum
services, such as supporting the breastfeeding relationship and
establishing a birth plan.
Various
trials have shown that doula support before, during and after labour
decreases the rate of cesarean sections, the length of labour, the use
of oxytocin and pain medications, and the number of forceps deliveries
and epidurals. Some of the long-term benefits of having a doula are
improved breastfeeding, increased time spent with the baby, quicker
maternal bonding with the baby, and decreased postpartum depression.

Breastfeeding Support |
|
| |
|
|
| |
As a
breastfeeding counsellor, it is my intention to support the lactating
women in a number of ways: to provide information about the benefits of
breastfeeding and the various ways in which she can make the experience
an enjoyable one for both herself and her baby; to encourage and support
her with appropriate information and techniques when breastfeeding
difficulties arise; to provide immediate postpartum care until
breastfeeding has been successfully established; and to help in unusual
breastfeeding situations, such as when mom and/or baby are ill.
